Telford & Wrekin Council chiefs today ended eight months of speculation by revealing where their prestigious new civic headquarters are to be built – Southwater.
There had been calls for the new offices to be sited in Dawley or Wellington but members of the ruling cabinet have plumped for the Telford town centre site.
Supermarket giant Asda has agreed to buy the authority’s existing Malinslee House head office on the outskirts of the town centre and move there from its current location in Telford Shopping Centre.
The council, which announced it was selling Malinslee House last August, expects its new headquarters to be ready by 2013 and Asda bosses today said their new superstore would be open by 2014.
The new council headquarters form part of a planned £250 million redevelopment of the Southwater area.
Telford & Wrekin Council leader Councillor Andrew Eade said the building would help the regeneration of the town centre gather momentum, adding: “Southwater is undoubtedly the best location.”
The new civic centre will form just part of an ambitious, £250 million project aimed at breathing new life into the heart of Telford, with the creation of bars, restaurants, a new hotel, an extended International Centre, new offices and meeting facilities and a new library.
Councillor Eade also “absolutely refuted” claims by his Labour opposite number Councillor Keith Austin that the council would have to borrow £58 million to fund the ambitious town centre revamp.
Council spokesman Russell Griffin said the aim of the massive Southwater redevelopment would be to create a centre of regional and national importance.

I am prepared to bet on 2 things:
1. The Council Tax payers are thrilled that their councillors and officials will be working in a place that they feel is worthy of them.
2. That the building will not be built under-budget or on time.

So how much is this going to cost the local council tax payers. There are plenty of empty office buildings in Telford, just move into one of them.
Its a joke that in the current financial climate that the authority can afford to build what will be a over priced, over budget and over time building and it will be us who end up shelling out for the councilor’s in their overpaid jobs to work in.

What? Not in Wellington or Oakengates? Plenty of space in both towns.

Well I assume Asda will be paying for most of it and Southwater land is aleady owned by the council so it probably won’t be too expensive for the taxpayer.

Grey, you must live in a dream world if you believe that the new offices won’t cost the taxpayer an arm and a leg.
Keith Austin has mentioned 56 million, do you know something he doesn’t?

I’m sure we will have to fork out and frankly I’d rather they stay at the existing offices rather than have that ugly Asda. But they are getting a big payout from them, they are relocating to land they already own so won’t have to buy or lease any so it could be worse. As for the 58 million that Keith Austin mentioned well that doesn’t just include their new offices but refurbishment and extension of the ice rink and bowling alley vast improvements to the public realm and a new multi storey car park none of which comes cheap.

Grey. I had the pleasure of meeting with Hark and they had plans of including the ice rink into the shopping centre were the current bus station is, the current bus station was supposed to move over to the train station, Any ideas what happened to those ideas?

nice cushy offices for the staff with free parking no doubt, on top of a final salary pension its an outrage, they should have to use a port a cabin in woodside, see how their rate payers live!!!

John, as far as I now they are still working out the details of the Round but I think that a lack of communication between the council and Hark has killed any ideas of the ice rink etc being incorporated into the shopping centre. I expect the bus station to be moved possibly to Lawn Central and the current bus station site to be redeveloped becuase the long term aspiration for Coach Central is to eliminate most traffic and turn it into a pedestrian friendly “boulevard” lined with buildings like a traditional street.
