The big thaw appeared to be under way today as forecasters warned melting snow and ice could see flash floods hitting Britain next.

Warmer temperatures and heavy rain are forecast over the weekend and experts have warned a quick thaw could put rivers in Shropshire and Mid Wales under pressure.

An Environment Agency spokesman said: “There may be an increased risk of flooding in some areas due to the predicted heavy rain and the partial thawing of snow, and we continue to closely monitor weather conditions and river levels.

“While snow is deep in some places, the small amount of water that results from snow melt is not expected to cause significant flooding problems if it happens steadily over many days. With the forecast rainfall, this thawing may happen more quickly.”

Temperatures may even hit 7C (45F) this weekend but the cold snap is predicted to return next week.
