Deepcut play to be aired on radio

Thursday 14th January 2010, 10:27AM GMT.

cheryl-james-top1A play about the death of teenage soldier and her parents’ quest for the truth about how she died is to be broadcast tomorrow.

Deep Cut, Radio 4′s Play for Today at 9pm, looks at how Des and Doreen James, of Llanymynech, try to cope with the death of their daughter, Cheryl.

Private James died from a single bullet wound to her head when on guard duty at the Surrey barracks in November 1995. She was one of four young recruits to die at the barracks between 1995 and 2002.

The play is an adaptation by Philip Ralph of his own stage play that toured Britain last year. It won awards and critical acclaim at the Edinburgh Fringe and was also taken to London.

He is now working an an adaptation for TV and film.

Mr and Mrs James hope that the airing of the play on radio will help their campaign for a public inquiry.

Mr James said: “Whatever the Government tries to get us to believe, there has never been an inquiry into the deaths. The Nicholas Blake review looked at duty of care in the Armed Forces, not at Deepcut and not at the death of Cheryl or the other three recruits.”

Mr James said all the actors in the stage play had taken on their roles for the radio play.

“They are all behind the campaign and Brian Cathcart in particular has been a great help,” he added.

The play, directed by Mick Gordon, draws on public documents and verbatim records as well as the words and the memories of Mr and Mrs James.
