Town road stays closed after blast

The Welsh Bridge has finally reopened to traffic
A major route through the centre of Shrewsbury could be closed for another month while repairs take place following the explosion which injured five people.
And business leaders today said they would hold talks with Shropshire Council to ensure lessons are learned from the blast which happened on the corner of Bridge Street and Smithfield Road on January 3.
The council today said traffic would not be allowed to travel on the eastbound carriageway along Mardol Quay and Smithfield Road between Bridge Street and Roushill during the closure and will also be prohibited to drive along Bridge Street, with the route closed for pedestrians and cyclists as well.
The road will be closed to allow emergency repairs to property, traffic lights, signs and utility services.
Peter Bettis, chairman of Shrewsbury Business Chamber, said the organisation would hold a meeting with the council to see what “lessons can be learned from the explosion”.
Sarah Pearse and Sam Devine-Turner, who were hurt in the blast, were today described as “critical but stable” in hospital while Scott Godbold and Annie Davies are said to be “comfortable”. All four are being treated at Selly Oak Hospital in Birmingham.
Kiley Mcdonnell, one of the stars of Theatre Severn’s Peter Pan, is seriously ill at the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital, where he is being treated for spinal injuries.

Shropshire Council at its best, you have killed this town, don’t make it worse than it already is, the traders are pulling out enough as it is.

Closing those roads for a month will mean very few visitors from Wales for that period. Typical Britain, a small explosion and the states first and only response is close the road for as long as possible.
