Fundraisers aim to aid victims of blast
Wednesday 13th January 2010, 11:30AM GMT.

Scores of businesses and residents are organising a number of fundraising events in a bid to support the victims of the Shrewsbury blast.
Staff from Mount House nursing home in Shrewsbury, will be holding a charity event on Sunday for the Bridge Street Fund. Members of Shropshire band The Good Swimmers are reuniting for the charity bash, which will be held at the Source vodka bar.
The bar is just yards from where the explosion happened on January 3, destroying a building on the corner of Bridge Street and Smithfield Road.
Sound Excuse and The Notes will also play on the night, which starts at 8pm.
Tickets, available on the door, are £5 with all profits going to the fund, which was set up to help the five people most seriously injured in the blast.
Singer Amy Studt, who has had several Top 10 hits, and who is due to appear at the Source vodka bar on January 31, has donated a signed copy of her latest album which will be auctioned off on the night of the fundraiser.
The organisers are also hoping former Big Brother contestant Kris Donnelly, who is from Shrewsbury, will make an appearance.
Carole Watkins, manager of the nursing home, said: “Because it’s so near to our facilities and the Source bar we all wanted to help as neighbours.
“We heard the blast and everyone was concerned and felt so sorry for the young people who were hurt.” The Hive Music and Media Centre is also supporting the fund by collecting donations at its next live music evening.
The fundraiser will be tied to a cultural diversity event being held to mark Holocaust Memorial day.
The gig and exhibition will take place on January 27 and is aimed at promoting harmony, diversity and acceptance by encouraging artists of all nationalities and ethnic backgrounds to participate and express themselves through creative media.
Music will be provided by four acts – Bang On Samba Band, Ez and DJ Buzzword, Innasanctum and Olugbala Kokomu.
Doors open at 7.15pm and entry is £4. For more information visit www.myspace.com/liveatthehive
The Hive is also appealing for people to donate to the fund, which was set up to help victims Annie Davies, Sarah Pearse, Sam Devine-Turner, Scott Godbold and Kiley McDonnell, all of whom were seriously injured, by sending cash, a cheque or postal order to the fund.
Donations can be handed in at several Shrewsbury businesses as well as to the reception at Shire Hall.

The same ‘Source’ bar that promoted their drinks offers on their Facebook page by using words referencing the blast after it had happened! It was and is disgusting and many Facebook users vowed to never enter the ‘bar’ again after stooping so low to try and promote their gross place!! I SHALL CERTAINLY NOT BE STEPPING FOOT IN THERE.
My thoughts are with Sam, Sarah, Scott, Annie and Kiley wishing them a speedy recovery.
