Shropshire Terry Wogan fans are divided on the merits of new Radio 2 breakfast DJ Chris Evans as he continues his fight to hold on to millions of loyal “Togs”.

BBC officials were reported as being nervous as Evans took over from Sir Terry yesterday, fearing that many Togs — Terry’s Old Guys or Gals — would jump ship and tune in to another station.

Tog Kim March, from Church Stretton, has been waking up to Wogan for years and regularly tunes in during early morning fitness sessions on his cross-trainer.

Mr March said he was not convinced by Evans’ debut, but would be giving him time to find his feet.

He said: “I managed to stay on the cross-trainer this morning for a 40-minute work out with Chris Evans.

“First of all, there is no natural successor to Terry Wogan so we all have to accept the fact that we’re starting a new journey.

“On the basis of a very limited sample, I did not chuckle once in that 40 minutes — banal and mediocre, I thought.

“However, to be fair I’m going to listen a few more times before making a final decision, if only to enjoy listening to the dulcet tones of the lovely Moira Stewart.

“The only other good thing was that in my angst to get to end of the workout and switch Chris Evans off I appear to have upped my work rate by 10 per cent! Every silver cloud. . . ”

Pete Wagstaff, managing director of MNA Radio which includes Telford FM and Severn FM said he believed it would be a few years before Evans’ success or failure could be properly judged.

He said: “Oddly enough I thought he sounded rather nervous, despite all his years on air and telling us he won’t be.

“But he was less brash than I thought he would be, but still a bit “full on” for Radio 2.

“He will scare off long-term listeners, some may drift back if they don’t like what else is out there but there’s plenty of great breakfast radio to go around.”

Mr Wagstaff added: “The music was somewhat different from the normal stuff you would expect with Terry Wogan and Radio 2 at that time of day.

“The music mix was very wide. Do folks who like Matt Monro really like AC/DC?

“I think with this guy you really do love him or hate him and first thing in the morning listener tolerance level is low.

“Will he do the numbers? Tough question on day one — it will take a good two years before we know.”

Lawley listener, Steve Tyrer, a young Tog at 34, said he was spared the Evans experience due to the weather.

He said today: “I only got to listen to the first 10 minutes of the breakfast show before we discovered a burst water pipe in our garage, but what I can say is thank heavens for a burst pipe — it saved me listening to the rest of the show.

“I think I will continue to listen to local radio.”

What is wrong with people?. If you don’t like it, don’t listen. Simple!. Personally I think he’s a great broadcaster (Or is he a DJ), and having read out my joke on this mornings show, I’m going to continue to listen. Great music and the lovely Moira – leave if you like – there’s not a lot of choice…….

I’ve already taken Matt’s advice and stopped listening to Chris Evans ages ago. I didn’t care for Wogan much, but I’ve rushed for the OFF switch wherever Chris Evans has reared his ugly juvenile head. Unfortunately, as Matt says, people have no choice. The BBC keep sticking Evans into well-loved shows just to court the mythical YOOF audience, who they mistakenly assume are all air-heads. He ruined Drive Time, now it’s the breakfast show. I’m not yet ready for Radio 3. I refuse to listen to hours of no-brain advertising on the commercial stations. Where do the BBC expect me to go?

Has John Howard (no. 3) considered BBC Five Live’s Drive programme at 5pm with Anita Anand and Peter Allen? Sublime broadcasting. It’s a shame that it’s only available on 909/693AM if you don’t have digital in your car!

Wogan’s Floral Dance was an appalling infringment of my human rights. I demand compensation.

Personally I like Chris Evans and listened to his drive time show most week days, Terry was a class act and his Janet and John stories were so funny. Really like Radio 4 for its imformative and interesting content, not a big of Radio Shropshire but do listen to it for local news and sport.

Chris Evans is too juvenile for me.
Mind you, I also can’t stand the amateurs on radio shropshire.

Who is that idiot on in the mid-morning that just witters on, and thinks his ‘banter’ with the newsreader is entertaining.

    It’s not, it’s cringeworthy

And when I’m driving home, waiting for the travel report, there’s another idiot ‘bantering’ with the aforementioned newsreader.

    Absolute amateurs

I don’t dislike Chris Evans, but I think it’s difficult to beat Radio 4 for sheer quality and variety of programming – worth the licence fee on its own!

    Dick,

Why do you have to be so personal? If you dont like them then dont listen, you obvioulsy know who the ‘idiot’ is, do you want people to agree with you? is that it?
    Only one idiot here.
S.S why did you let him post that?

    Glyn,
Due to circumstances beyond my control, I have no choice but to endure the mind-numbing nonsense that is Radio Shropshire.

I object to licence fees being wasted on this (and several other BBC projects), when it just isn’t necessary.

There are plenty of commercial radio stations that pander to the lowest common denominator, this should leave the BBC free to cater for more highbrow channels, eg Radios 3 and 4

Don’t even get me started on BBC television, the same argument applies.

    Dick,
This is a about you being insulting to someone we clearly know, but if you wish to ‘start’ on the bbc….No you dont have to listen to any bbc station, the same as dont have to pay for a licence! I pay for a licence but I dont expect every single programme, production and service to be exactley what I want, I pay and I choose what I want to see and listen, and going back to listening to Radio Shrop they are not obliged to read out a traffic report the same as you are not obliged to travel.
    P.s Heard of traffic master?
