Friends of The Wrekin group saved

The future of a Shropshire group formed to protect The Wrekin has been secured after volunteers came forward to help with its running.
All Friends Round the Wrekin had been at serious risk of being wound up because it had no chairman, secretary and treasurer.
But at a meeting last night a number of people stepped forward to fill the posts.
The new chairman is Bridget Woollard, of Shawbirch, who had been to group meetings before, while the secretary is Steve Hooker, who runs its website.
Group president George Evans, who has been involved since it was set up in 2004, said he was delighted but surprised and added: “It was decided to keep the organisation going and so a chairman, secretary and treasurer were elected.”
He said he had not known how many people would turn up to the meeting at Wellington Civic Centre.
Pat Fairclough, former secretary and a member of the group, said: “Quite honestly when I went to the meeting my feeling was it will probably fold up.”
But she said people felt there was a still need for the group, which was set up when part of the hill might have been sold, especially with opencast mining due to be carried out nearby.
