County climber plunges from ice cliff

Tuesday 12th January 2010, 7:20PM GMT.

A Shropshire climber has survived an 80ft fall from an ice cliff in the French ski resort of Alpe d’Huez after snow cushion his impact.

The man from Newcastle, near Craven Arms, was climbing the ice face with a group of six when the accident happened yesterday afternoon.

He was airlifted to hospital and is believed to have only suffered a broken ankle.

Police in France said he was extremely fortunate to land on fresh snow which cushioned his landing like a mattress.
