Wayne Austin, of Claverley Crescent, Harlescott, appeared at a special sitting at Shrewsbury Magistrates Court on Saturday.

He is charged with murdering Paul Wayne Rugg, 52, during an incident at a flat in Kynaston Road, Harlescott Grange, in the town on Wednesday night.

Magistrates remanded Austin in custody and committed the case to Shrewsbury Crown Court, where he is due to appear next Monday. Austin was one of four men arrested in connection with the incident. One man was released without charge on Friday. The other two have been released on bail pending further inquiries.

Paramedics were called to the flat in Kynaston Road and found Mr Rugg with serious stab wounds.

He was taken to the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital, but died shortly after arriving at the hospital. Detectives launched a murder inquiry and four men were arrested within hours of the incident.

A woman, who wished to remain anonymous, said Mr Rugg worked at the White Hart pub in Mardol, which no longer exists, and was a well-known figure behind the bar.
