Letter: Unable to get hold of local councillors

The road is clear but the pavement is not in Ironbridge. By Ian Clark.

Letter: Recent news reports in your newspaper have highlighted that “unnecessary” street furniture has, and is, being removed from the centre of Ironbridge and its surroundings.

Telford & Wrekin Council, which is carrying out this operation, has in its wisdom removed the grit and salt bins as part of this programme. Hence, over Christmas, the pavements and car parks have literally become skating rinks.

Hard compacted ice on paving slabs have turned the area into a dangerous and lethal area for residents and visitors alike.

To watch people falling over and cars slide into one another is not amusing, someone will be seriously injured or killed.

Trying to contact the council and councillors proved impossible over the holidays. One even stated that the problem could not be sorted out until after the Christmas holidays as the relevant person capable of remedying the situation was on holiday.

After a desperate plea on Radio Shropshire, an emergency grit team was despatched which resulted in a gritted road, but no treatment to the icy pavements as parked cars blocked the throw of grit.

Does the council not have wheelbarrows and operatives to use them?

To put the icing on the cake, excuse the pun, the one councillor who did contact me said that their families were more important to them at Christmas time than the residents they serve. What? They are elected to serve the community 365 days a year.

Obviously people injuring themselves and vehicles is not important to them.

If as stated the letter writer got poor servie from their councillor then she should have named them .This would then give them the chance to defend themselves and for the public to see what they have as a councillor.

Hear, hear, Mr. Finch, I agree.

If those are the facts, then Graham Hickman should name and shame this councillor.

I think its important to realise here that every Cllr cannot be available everyday of the year and the fact that the person who could do something was on their holiday is a fair comment from the relevant Councillor.

We can be frustrated, but cannot expect every Cllr to be in a position to solve things that could be out of their individual control.

Then to expect people to walk around pushing wheelbarrows is really not fair.

I’ve had the pleasure of living in Norway and experienced 6 months in the arctic on expedition. These places are used to these severe weather conditions, the UK isn’t, you can see that simply by the way people drive their cars in snow, so many don’t even clear the snow from their vehicles before driving.

“To put the icing on the cake, excuse the pun, the one councillor who did contact me said that their families were more important to them at Christmas time than the residents they serve.”

Maybe they have genuine reason for that thought.

People also have a responsibility to themselves, you cannot expect a Cllr or the Council to do everything for you.

Over all, I think the Council have performed well over this period of severe weather conditions.

Remember Cllr’s are actually paid for 140 days a year.

I said in a previous message that Cllr’s are paid for 140 days a year, that is a mistake, the allowances they receive is actually for 140 hours a year.

I sympathise, but one small point – why should Ironbridge get any better treatment that all the other ungritted pavements, roads and car parks around the borough?

What the hell is wrong with people. I took a walk around my estate the other day looking for a grit tub, even went past the old folks bungalows and residental home and nothing. I bet the Councillors can get hold of some grit for their own use though.

Name and shame these people as you say they are elected to serve 365 days not just 1.

This sort of response from a councillor (elected by us) does not surprise me. I wrote to three last year about the state of the road near my house and all three didn’t even have the courtesy to acknowledge my letters let alone reply to them.

Do you realise that Cllr’s only have to operate for 140 hours a year and that is what their allowances cover. Clearly people are being short changed by some, but like kath says, why should ironbridge get what the rest of the borough isn’t.

How big were these grit bins which enabled people to make safe pavements, roads and carparks.
And as for wanting to put your own family first at Christmas, come on now and behave yourself, they are only human after all.

John, because people only have to does not mean they should only what is requird.
It gets me annoyed I have dealt with councillors, in the main especially ours they were perfect , MP current one Daniel k perfect, school chair of guv a disgrace could not answer my question or give me any sensible advise so threw in “I do not get paid to do this” then do not put yourself forward for any of these positions if you are not prepared to put yourself out.
Do not do it for the money or to make your cv look good or any other rason other than to serve your local community.

Don’t know who my local councillor is – they’re not exactly forthcoming at introducing themselves in Trench – never see anyone at voting time either!

If Mr Hickman is so concerned about not being able to contact his councillors over the holiday period, why didn’t he try to get hold of his MP. I am totally certain that the local MP would have been only too happy to leave his family to sort out the gritting of the pavements in Ironbridge.
May I now take my tongue out of my cheek?

Andrew, i’ve also dealt with Cllr’s, MP’s etc and still do on a regular basis, but this letter is not reasonable. I’m all for having a pop at poor performing politicians, but sometimes there is not a great deal they can do, as in this case.

The issue here is it was not what they could not do but that they were more interested in the xmas period. If I thought like that we would have had a few unhappy people at xmas . And no I am not Santa.

Firslty Parish Councillors in The gorge do not get paid they are volunteers. On the day Mr HIckman talks about he did not try to get hold of every counicllor nor the clerk. 4 councillors were available that day as was the clerk who does notlive in The Gorge but dealt with the issue as soon as she knew from home. Parish Councillors contact details are available in The Gorge GAzette and on the Parish Council website. the clerk’s contact details are in The Shropshire Star everynight. the office phone is available at all times even when the office is closed. If Mr HIckman would like to contact the clerk she will explain further
