Jobs boost for power tool maker
Monday 11th January 2010, 11:56AM GMT.
More than 70 new jobs are to be created at a major tool manufacturer in Shropshire, it was revealed today.
Makita Manufacturing Europe says 2010 will see the transfer of new and existing power tools and gardening products from Japan and China to Telford.
The company has just completed a new £1.3 million extension at its Hortonwood plant and is creating the jobs over the next year.
Makita already employs around 450 people.
Paul Harris, operations director at the Telford plant, said: “We have a fantastic workforce that has supported the company through what has been a difficult year of global recession.
It is due to their spirit and hard work that we have been allocated the opportunity to produce these new and exciting products here in Telford.”

Some good news to start the New Year

Great News. I visited the Makita HQ in Milton Keynes in October 2009 and was really impressed with the scale and professionalism of the operation. They are a very organised outfit. I was also shown a presentation about what goes on at Telford and was impressed with that as well. It’s great to see more power tools being made here in the UK, well done Makita.

Monkey,
I’m sure any indigenous person wishing to apply for one of these jobs will be considered alongside all other qualified candidates with legal employment status.
Sadly too many will lack the skills or be too bone idle to apply, and many of these ignorant, feckless people will doubtless sulk at home blaming ‘the immigrants’ for their plight – pathetic!

i am surprised you have not moaned due to the fact that Makita is infact an immigrant company who at anytime just as they have in China/japan could take the work elsewhere.

How refreshing it is to see jobs being created in Manufacturing!
Fact is – it’s ONLY manufacturing that creates any true wealth in our economic system.
I define wealth creation as “changing the state of (Physical or “real” ) raw material.
Other “service” industries such as Banking, insurance, etc don’t create ANY wealth.
They are akin to a river – controlling the “direction and flow of funds” – BUT they don’t put the water in!! – THAT’S created elsewhere – and the economy is no different.
This country needs to get back to a sound manufacturing footing before it’s too late – … If it isn’t already
(look at the banking fiasco – what if THOSE size of funds had been injected into Manufactutring when it needed it – just think what a sound base we would have now !!)
The service industries, PARTICLULARY banks – have had it easy for FAR TOO long. Their arrogance towards their customers is breathtaking
These industries need a short sharp shock – and an emerging abundance of Manufacturing industry would be a start.
Whoever fills these jobs.. good luck – and lets see a lot more of it!
