Snow at the Prostar Stadium, home of Shrewsbury Town
Temperatures in big-freeze Britain were on a par with the South Pole today after the country suffered its coldest night of the winter so far.
The mercury sank to -21.6C (-6.9F) in the Scottish Highlands this morning – close to the -22.9C (-9.2F) currently at the southernmost part of the globe.
The weather station at Shawbury recorded a temperature of -10C (14F) overnight but in more rural areas the temperature is believed to have dropped even lower.
With bitterly cold temperatures across the UK, there was more widespread disruption on the roads, trains and at airports, with hundreds of schools also shut again today.
