Simpson frustrated at first call-off

Manager Paul Simpson today admitted his frustration as Shrewsbury Town faced up to their first postponed game of the season.
Shrewsbury’s scheduled home clash with Barnet tomorrow became a casualty of the cold snap which has decimated the weekend’s football programme across Britain.
Local referee Sasa Ihringova inspected the pitch yesterday afternoon and there was little option but to call off the game 48 hours in advance.
Simpson was anxious to play the game after successive away victories, but admitted all hope had evaporated.
“We wanted to play to build on the momentum of the last two games and try and carry those performances into a game in front of our own supporters after some disappointments at home,” said the Town boss.
“But there was absolutely no chance. There were areas of the pitch that weren’t playable and when you take into consideration supporter safety and the surrounding areas, it was a straight-forward decision.
“It’s frustrating but there is nothing we could have done.”
Meanwhile, Town have announced discounts of up to 35 per cent for admission to the home game against Accrington Stanley on Saturday, January 30.
The offer only applies to tickets brought in advance of the game.
