Hankey stunned by Chisnall’s fightback

Ted 'The Count' Hankey Crushed Shropshire darter Ted Hankey was today coming to terms with one of the most painful defeats of his career.

Defending champion Hankey looked on course to reach the semi-finals of the BDO World Championships at Frimley Green as he stormed into a 4-1 lead against Dave Chisnall last night.

That left Hankey, of Aqueduct, requiring just one more set for victory – but the quarter-final turned on its head after the interval as Chisnall staged a remarkable fightback to run out a 5-4 winner.

“I can’t believe what happened,” said Hankey. “Without the break I would have won 5-1 but after that, Dave came out a different person – he was unbelievable.”

Hankey was within one leg of winning the match in the seventh set, only for Chisnall to hold under pressure.

And what turned out to be the decision leg also proved a tense affair with Chisnall hitting the winning double at the 10th attempt – but only after Hankey had himself missed nine darts to prolong the match.

Hankey had been bidding to join darting legends Eric Bristow and Raymond van Barneveld as the only players to win the Lakeside title in two successive years.

s Last night’s other quarter-final was a far more one-sided affair as top seed and last year’s runner up Tony O’Shea beat Robert Wagner 5-1 to set up a last-four meeting with Chisnall.
