Four being questioned on murder

Friday 8th January 2010, 12:37PM GMT.

Police seal off a building on Kynaston Road.

Detectives were today still questioning four men over the murder of a 52-year-old Shrewsbury man who was found with stab wounds at a flat in the town.

The man, named locally as Paul Rugg, suffered the injuries in an incident at a flat in Kynaston Road, Harlescott, on Wednesday night.

A murder inquiry was launched by detectives when the man died shortly after arriving at the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital and four men were all arrested within hours of the incident.

Senior investigating officer Detective Chief Inspector Lee Davenport said the men, who were arrested on suspicion of murder, were still being questioned today.

And he said police were applying to magistrates to extend the detention period for further questioning of the suspects throughout today and tomorrow.

He said: “The investigation is going well and we are making good progress. Members of the public in the locality of the flat have given us tremendous support and we are continuing to interview a number of potential witnesses who have come forward.

“However, I am still anxious to hear from anyone with relevant information who has not yet contacted the police. It is vital they contact Shrewsbury Police Station on 0300 3333000 as a matter of urgency.”

Mr Davenport said officers were keen to hear from people who may have heard an argument between a group of men in the area in the run-up to the incident.

Forensic officers have been working at the scene and the man is due to be formally identified today.
