Former JPs court to be sold
Friday 8th January 2010, 3:43PM GMT.
Controversial moves to demolish the 166-year-old building in Shifnal to make way for four homes were deferred three times by councillors on Shropshire’s area regulatory planning committee – leaving the town council dismayed.
The knockbacks proved too much for councillors who decided to pull the plug on redevelopment plans as the cost to rate payers soared.
The building will now be sold with planning permission granted to it in 2000 for five flats and office space.
With the council giving up ownership, rate payers will also see their precept fall from £169,000 last year to £65,000 for 2010/2011.
Councillor John Hardware said the town council made the right decision as the cost of holding onto the building was rocketing.
