Multi-million pound proposals to build a new Asda superstore, petrol station and 500-space car park in Telford have been given the go ahead.

Planners last night granted the supermarket giant permission for a 44,000 sq ft store on the site of Telford & Wrekin Council’s civic offices.

As the application is outside of the council’s agreed development plan it will now go to the Secretary of State for review, but it is not expected to have any impact on last night’s decision.

Members of Telford & Wrekin Council’s Plans Board were split over making the decision, with half the committee abstaining on the grounds they were not given enough time to digest all of the submissions made.

However the four votes in favour were enough to secure the new store, which will take its 350 staff from Asda in the town centre.

Objections came from town centre owners Hark Apollo which wanted Asda to stay in the town centre. Its bosses have submitted plans of their own to build a £30 million “iconic” timber-clad building on the Red Oak car park to house a supermarket and other retail units.

But Councillor Joy Francis rejected Hark’s objection that the Civic Offices site was out of town and would detract from the existing shops.

She said: “They think it will take customers away from the shops in the centre but every Saturday, Sunday and Bank Holiday thousands of people park their cars over here, when we are not here, and go across the road to go into the town centre, so I don’t see that as a valid objection.

“As for the old Asda building, if they could attract someone like John Lewis that would be fantastic.”

Councillors also gave outline planning consent to Asda to build 79 homes next to the store.

So here we have confirmation of the extent of the current council’s ambition for Telford. They are quite happy to see the town centre remain ugly and lifeless, slave to the private car and unwelcoming to the pedestrian. Just as long as they get a few million to pay for some shiny new offices for themselves. I won’t be voting for them in the next local elections that’s for sure.

Actually I suspect this is a sound financial decision on behalf of the bourough which may support further investment in our high streets and communities not least support our local economy maintaining jobs , creating wealth you know the things that fund government.

Great news. Delighted for Asda. A good two fingers up to Hark Apollo’s whose shopping centre is nothing short of an embarrassment. Hopefully a few more retailers will move out, we can bulldoze our ugly town centre completely and start afresh. Or convince people to go back to shopping locally. I’m sure Wellington, Oakengates etc etc would be pleased

Start afresh by replicating all the same problems that the town centre already has? Yeah that’s a great idea.
It is Hark Appollo that are proposing developments that are positive in urban design terms and far more sustainable than this.

It is all very nice and ASDA will literally be on our doorstep at work and that is where the problem lies, the Southwater Way road isnt suitable for heavy traffic realistically, so I hope they are going to upgrade the road system at the same time, it is hard enough getting out of work now let alone a busy supermarket being added. May I also add that the Council have never consulted with us, the pub or the job centre about the proposal!!!

    Rob, Telford

The future of Telford looks dull and if the current council have their way, it will remain just that. Do we want a vibrant town centre which is not just a shopping centre or do we want another lifeless dull building just so a supermarket can maximise profit from building cheap. Looks like the latter obviously.

Telford has never had a heart since its inception and at this rate never will.

Hear hear monkey! Telford is crying out to have new life injected into it. Surely we should be glad that there is a company willing to invest so much in these troubled times
