Hankey bids to sink surprise challenger

Thursday 7th January 2010, 12:21PM GMT.

Ted 'The Count' Hankey Ted Hankey steps up his bid to bring the BDO World Darts crown back to Shropshire tonight when he faces rising star Dave Chisnall in the last eight.

The duo go head-to-head at the Lakeside this evening (6.30pm) in a clash played over the best of nine sets.

Two-time champion Hankey, from Aqueduct in Telford, is bidding to retain the title he won last year in a memorable final against Tony O’Shea.

The No 5 seed, who won it for the first time back in 2000, has already seen off Gary Robson and Holland’s Willy van de Wiel, dropping just one set in the process.

But his attempt to emulate the likes of Eric Bristow and Raymond van Barneveld in winning the prestigious event two years running is sure to come under its toughest scrutiny so far from St Helens ace Chisnall.

Chisnall – a 40-1 outsider at the start of the week – was in formidable form against Tony West in his second round victory, and the 29-year-old is now being touted as a potential champion.

The winner of tonight’s clash will be up against either O’Shea or Norway’s Robert Wagner in the semi-finals, with that pair also playing their quarter-final this evening.
