‘Bonus’ game on Saturday is Telford aim
Thursday 7th January 2010, 6:00PM GMT.
AFC Telford United are bidding to stage an indoor friendly in a bid to keep ticking over during their enforced lay-off from competitive football.
The Bucks have not now played a match since December 28, when they were beaten 2-0 at Hinckley United in the Blue Square North.
And they are now hoping to arrange an indoor behind closed doors fixture against another local non-League side on Saturday as they look to maintain their sharpness.
“We’ve got the Dome (at TCAT) for training tonight, and if we can get some kind of behind closed doors game on Saturday, that would be great,” said boss Rob Smith.
“The weather at the moment is making it tough for everyone, training conditions are awful.
“You can’t get outside and do anything meaningful, so a game indoors would be a bonus.
“It’s not ideal, but everyone is in the same boat – and some teams are worse off in terms of fixtures than us.”
Smith believes the only benefit of the big freeze is that some of his walking wounded are getting the chance to rest and recuperate.
Midfielder Carl Rodgers (calf) and striker Andy Brown (ribs) have both been playing on despite nursing painful injuries and the break has done them good.
“That’s the only upside to all of this,” added Smith.
“The time off is giving all the knocks and bruises time to recover.”
