Garner leaves Town

Tuesday 5th January 2010, 1:47PM GMT.

Glyn Garner Goalkeeper Glyn Garner today waved farewell to Shrewsbury Town – and admitted he will always regret failing to make a bigger impact.

The Welshman’s two-and-a-half-year stay at the Prostar Stadium officially ended yesterday afternoon as Garner agreed a settlement on the remainder of his contract, which was due to expire in the summer.

He has not featured in a Town first team game since November 2008, with a string of shoulder problems leaving him sidelined for the vast majority of the last 12 months.

And Garner, who before his injury struggled to hold down a regular starting berth after manager Paul Simpson replaced Gary Peters, admitted he regretted not being able to contribute more.

“I’m really disappointed it hasn’t worked out better for me at Shrewsbury because I love the club, my family love living in Shropshire and the fans have been great to me,” said Garner.

“When the new gaffer came in (Simpson) it was the first time I had not been part of a manager’s plans – but that’s football and you have to accept it.

“But the injury problems have really knocked me back. A shoulder is just about the worst injury a goalkeeper can have but I’ve had the operation now and the rehabilitation is going well.

“There are no hard feelings with anyone at Shrewsbury and I’ve loved my time there. I now have to move on, look forward and try and get 100 per cent right.”

Garner is spending the next fortnight at Lilleshall to continue his rehabilitation and, despite starting to train as a teacher, he has no plans to quit football.

“The teaching is for further down the line and it’s gone on the back-burner a bit with trying to get my shoulder right,” added the 33-year-old.

“I still feel I can play for a good five years and hopefully I can get myself sorted with a club when I’m fully fit in a couple of weeks time.”

  • Town have received confirmation full back Dean Holden will serve just a one-match suspension – against Barnet on Saturday – for his dismissal at Chesterfield.
