The families of two of the victims of the massive blast which destroyed a Shrewsbury town centre building today spoke of the horror of the explosion.

Angharad Howard-Davies – known as Annie Davies – fell from the building, which then collapsed on top of her.

Annie DaviesHer mother today said it was a miracle the 19-year-old, who is in a stable condition after being airlifted to Birmingham’s Selly Oak Hospital, had survived.

Miss Davies’ friends Sam Devine-Turner and Sarah Pearse, both 19, are also in a stable condition at Selly Oak, as is Miss Pearse’s boyfriend Scott Godbold, 23.

Kiley McDonnell, who was starring in the Peter Pan pantomime at Theatre Severn as the character Jovial Jake, was also injured and was today in a serious but stable condition at the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital with spinal injuries.

It is thought he was in the car park at the Shrewsbury Hotel when the blast happened at the building at the junction of Smithfield Road and Bridge Street on Sunday morning.

Today Miss Davies’ mother Zulay said: “She felt like she was thrown outside and the building collapsed on top of her.”

She said her daughter had burns to her face, neck, hands, legs and chest and might have to undergo skin grafts.

“It’s a miracle she’s alive at all,” she added.

Mr Godbold’s father Steve said his son was living in the first floor flat with Miss Pearse and Miss Devine-Turner. Miss Davies had stayed the night following an evening out. Mr Godbold said: “They were all up and dressed and ready to go out when the explosion occurred. Scott was on the landing when the floor just opened up and flames went right through and the floor collapsed.”

Mr Godbold said his son had undergone two operations, including a skin graft on his hands.

The Health and Safety Executive is continuing to investigate the circumstances which led to the explosion. The cause of the explosion is still to be determined and staff are likely to remain on site all week.
