Wrekin campaigners fear group will fold

Monday 4th January 2010, 9:51AM GMT.

WrekinA Shropshire community group formed to protect The Wrekin could be on the brink of folding, it emerged today.

All Friends Round The Wrekin was set up in August 2004, but the group is without a chairman, secretary and treasurer – and president George Evans says he’s too old to shoulder the burden of running it.

If nobody comes forward to fill the key posts at its next meeting on January 11 the group will be wound up.

Mr Evans said: “My guess is that it will be the end of it.

“I don’t mind being president and figurehead, but running it is a bit more than I care to carry on with at my age.

“Phil Fairclough has resigned as treasurer and we don’t have a chairman or secretary, so unless there are volunteers to take over, All Friends Round The Wrekin will have to wind up.

“We have a bit of money, a hundred quid or so, and we will simply pass it on to whoever it’s decided to.

“We only collected money to pay the rent for the hall.”

The group, which was initially set up when 126 acres of The Wrekin was put up for sale, has acted as a forum for Wrekin-lovers.

The crunch meeting, which is open to everyone, is at Wellington Civic Centre on January 11 at 7pm.

Seems to me like there just isn’t the public interest in this…and therefore if it’s in private hands let them do what they like with it – the public have had their chance
