A pantomime star and two women were today named as three of the people injured in a massive explosion which caused a building to collapse in Shrewsbury town centre.

Sarah Pearse and Sam Devine-TurnerNineteen-year-old Sam Devine-Turner was thrown from a flat in the blast and was critical but stable today at Birmingham’s Selly Oak Hospital, her father Paul Turner said.

Her friend Sarah Pearse, also 19, was injured in the explosion and is also being treated at Selly Oak. Her condition is critical.

Also among the injured was Kiley McDonnell, who was starring in the Peter Pan pantomime at Theatre Severn as the character Jovial Jake.

Kiley McDonnellEric Smith, of BBC Radio Shropshire, said Mr McDonnell, from London, was in intensive care at the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital with spinal injuries after the explosion at a block of flats at the junction of Smithfield Road and Bridge Street.

It is believed Mr McDonnell was in the car park of the Shrewsbury Hotel when he was caught in the blast. Another of those injured is Scott Godbold.

Mr Turner said his daughter had been placed in an induced coma because of her injuries and had suffered superficial burns to her face with severe burns to her arms and hands.

Mr Turner, 52, of Moston Road, said: “It’s a nightmare. It’s really knocked me for six but they are all so lucky.”

A relative confirmed that Mr Godbold was also in hospital. It is thought he had been taken to the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital before being transferred to Selly Oak Hospital, where he is critical but stable.

George Candler, assistant director of culture and leisure at Shropshire Council, today confirmed Mr McDonnell had been taken to hospital.

He said: “We are aware that a member of the production company for Peter Pan has been involved and clearly our thoughts go out to him and his family.”

Roads in Shrewsbury town centre remained closed and revised bus and park and ride services were operating.

Theatre Severn, which had some minor damage caused by the explosion, was today closed for routine maintenance but the Quarry Fitness and Swimming Centre opened as normal. The council said phone lines were not working at the centre or the Guildhall, but engineers were working on them.

Anthony Archambault, 32, was in the Shrewsbury Hotel with his girlfriend Helen Palin when the blast happened.

He said: “We heard this really loud rumbling sound, which seemed to ripple through the building. My initial thoughts were that it was an earthquake of some sort, but the rumbling seemed to carry on and on, it seemed like minutes but in reality probably only seconds had passed.

“All of a sudden there was a tremendous smashing sound, everyone screamed out and there were shouts from the remaining customers.”

“We didn’t know if the building was going to collapse onto us, or if we should stay or exit the building, it was sheer immediate panic.

“I noticed one of the front windows was completely smashed, I heard one of the bar staff say: ‘Call an ambulance’, and someone shouted out, my heart immediately sank, I rushed forward to see if I could see anyone who needed assistance, but the bar staff ushered us all back towards the fire exit and out of the building.

“I tried to remain calm, and we exited the Shrewsbury Hotel into the back alley. There was glass and debris everywhere, I was aware my legs were trembling.

“As we approached the bottom of Mardol, there was a large group of people all looking in shock and disbelief. A woman was on the top floor of a Mardol shop crying, behind a completely smashed pane of glass.

“It felt like a surreal action movie was unfolding right before my eyes.”

We where out walking our dog on the old railway line in Pontesbury and heard the explosion from there. At first we thought it sounded like a cannon gun going off, till we got home and heard it on the news!!!!

I was in Princess Royal Hospital Telford this afternoon and at 3pm was asked if I minded giving up my bed. I was happy to do this. I think they were making space for the major emergency in Shrewsbury and moving minor patients to Telford from RSH. To think they wanted to get rid of PRH just shows how important both hospitals are.

I live just over the other side of the welsh bridge ans heard a massive explosion and the whole building shook. I initially thought that a lorry or something had crashed into a neighbouring property but went outside and saw a mass of smoke and fire the other end of the bridge. Complete chaos! Thoughts and wishes go out to the people injured

Walking through the Quarry we could feel the blast as it went off, and then huge clouds of smoke appeared. The police got there really quickly, though.

Regarding this incident, how useless the ‘local’ radio station The Severn based somewhere in Shropshire was in reporting on the whole incident. Considering the Severn is affiliated to the star there is no excuse for no news delivered by Severn 106.5fm Both beacon radio and radio Shropshire and even Shropshire live internet sites provided a far better service of news yesterday

12 persons were hurt in this incident and two are still seriously ill in hospital with the most terrible injuries. I happen to know one of them and believe me, the shock, trauma and upset they and their families, friends and work colleagues are going through is truly awful..! It therefore saddens and angers me greatly to read the comments from Dave W and AS on these pages, whose seemingly only useful comment is to take snide and cheap shots at a piece of art work? Both of you should hang your heads in shame and pray that neither you, nor anyone you know or love is ever caught up in anything so terrible..!!

In reply to Spencer this was reported yesterday. I am sure they appreciatee your help.
Mark Spencer said: Jan 3rd, 2010 at 15:37 The silver Clio in the street on Vickie Warrens picture (picture number 2) is my car. My wife was directly outside the shop where the explosion took place and was caught in the blast and the associted falling debris. She allerted the fire service before reversing out of the immediate incident area. We have lost the car to the Police and my wife was left to make her own way home just minutes after the blast and already sufferring from shock. She was and I am extremely grateful that she was not seriously injured and both of our thoughts are with the injured and their families.

I would just like to say how impressed I have been over the last couple of days how the emergency services and other organisations have worked together to bring some normality to the town. The Police, local council, Arriva, etc have worked together to make it possible for people to move around the town despite the obvious difficulites in what is a very difficult situation. I also think the likes of St. Johns Ambulance, local hospitals, fire brigade, services companies and other organisations have also worked tirelessly – well done. Its nice to know the British spirit is still alive.
