Residents cap year with heroes’ award

Friday 1st January 2010, 11:30AM GMT.

Residents from a Shrewsbury estate have capped a community-themed year with the presentation of an inaugural achievement award for unsung neighbourhood heroes.

Described as the community Oscars “but slightly less glitzy”, the Ken and Maisie Ward Community Achievement Cup honoured people from the Meole estate who would normally avoid the glare of publicity.

The awards were organised by Christine Jones, the daughter of Ken and Maisie Ward.

She asked Meole Estate Community Action to manage the commemoration of her parents, and brother, who spent the bulk of their lives as residents of the estate from its very beginnings, by the funding of an annual presentation of the cup.

Each of the groups which operate on Meole estate under the umbrella of Meole Estate Community Action were invited to submit nominations of the person they thought had made a significant contribution to improving the lives of people on Meole Estate in recent times.

The three nominees for the award were Sharon Byrne for her work with the youth singing group Meole’s Got Talent, Gerry Williams, nominated by the Senior Citizens Club, and eventual winner of the cup, schoolgirl Shannon Hinton, nominated by the Church at the Meet Place.

Gavin McKenzie, chairman of Meole Estate Community Action, said: “This is a tremendous and welcome contribution to life on the estate.

“MECA has been delighted to be asked to help in the organising of the nomination and organisation of the cup which very much adds value to the activities on Meole estate.

“The nominees are all people who have given a great deal of their time and care to others on the estate, very much to the benefit of the individuals and the community.

“They all richly deserve public and local recognition and our thanks.”
