Car-azy road trip to raise cash for fund
Friday 1st January 2010, 11:30AM GMT.
A pair of Shrewsbury friends are to travel the length of Great Britain to raise cash for charity – without leaving their car once.
Richard Cole, from Monkmoor, and Stephen Stennett, from Heath Farm, will travel from Land’s End to John O’Groats on July 5.
And to make the journey more challenging they have vowed not to step outside until they arrive at their destination – meaning there will be no toilet breaks or stop offs to stretch their legs.
Mr Cole, 19, and Mr Stennett, 18, are hoping to raise between £4,000 and £5,000 for the Multiple Sclerosis Society through the challenge.
Mr Cole said: “It is a cause very to close to our hearts because my grandad passed away in January after battling MS for many years in which he was severely disabled. He was well-known throughout the community for his sporting abilities.”
The two friends have always wanted to travel the route and Mr Cole said they decided to combine it with a fundraising venture.
He added they formed the rules for a laugh and were looking forward to seeing how they would cope with them.
He said: “We are not allowed to leave the car at all until the journey is completed. This means no toilet breaks, no getting out for food, no getting out to sleep in a bed and breakfast or stepping out of the vehicle to put petrol in it.”
As well as not being able to leave the car the duo have banned the use of maps and sat navs and will only have a basic phone with no internet access.
Mr Cole, who is currently studying architecture, and Mr Stennett, a college student who also works part-time at Tesco, plan to hold other fundraising events leading up to the challenge and say they hope to take between two days and a week and find an interesting route between the two destinations.
They are looking for donations and also sponsorship to cover things like petrol and the lease of a car for the trip.
