Calls for a rethink on £1m cycle bid

Friday 1st January 2010, 11:30AM GMT.

Bosses behind a £1 million cycling scheme in Shrewsbury have been asked to go back to the drawing board amid fears that changes to a road could spell havoc for events such as the town’s famous Flower Show.

A number of proposals have been put forward to improve cycling and walking routes including a new promenade along the River Severn in the town centre, toucan crossings across Welsh Bridge and Smithfield Road, and cycle lane links.

But plans under the Sustrans: Connect 2 scheme to turn Victoria Quay into a one-way system have been criticised by members of Shrewsbury Town Council.

They say it will be impossible for lorries to get out of The Quarry. Shropshire Council is running the scheme in Shrewsbury.

Councillor Jon Tandy, who sits on the authority’s recreation and leisure committee, said an urgent rethink was needed.

He said: “As part of the new cycle network they want to make massive changes to that junction by making it more cycle and pedestrian friendly.

“Our main concern was actually that it would curtail what we could do in The Quarry. It would certainly cause a lot of problems because you won’t be able to get in and out of there with big lorries if it is made one-way.

“They will be forced to go along past the swimming baths and out on to Claremont Bank and they will get stuck.”

He said the authority had been told by Shropshire Council that special exemptions could be used for special events like the Flower Show, so that Victoria Quay could be used both ways.

But he said members of the committee thought that would be pointless as they would still be forced to pay for road closures and a police escort.

He said they also feared that the provision of an exemption clause for vehicle traffic from The Quarry would increase rather than reduce the conflict between pedestrians and vehicles.

Minutes from the committee’s meeting on December 16 say: “No thought had been given for the need by the town council to bring large pieces of specialist arboricultural and grass cutting equipment which may at times be needed in an emergency.

“Measures could be put in place to provide a cycle path along Victoria Avenue while maintaining two-way traffic, by widening the footpath and/or removing on-street parking.”

Nobody from Shropshire Council was available for comment.

    So what new?
    Who is running this council?
    A bunch of headless chickens?

Why bugger up a junction used by thousands of cars, vans and trucks every day for the sake of half a dozen militant cyclists?

The council should be promoting cycling, but not at the expense of everyone else. The roads are paid for by motorists, cyclists do not pay and should not get preferential treatment for roadspace.

Since when have the former SABC and their ilk ever cared one jot for Shrewsbury cyclists? As for the Quarry, who allows dogs to roam, leadless, and snap at the heels of passing cyclists and joggers along Victoria Avenue? Which councillor famously remarked when asked for street lights there that cyclists shouldn’t need them, would she let her grandchildren use this route after dark?
Since that thoughtless comment there has been a serious sexual assault on a female jogger and a fatality [in the "black hole" by Kingsland Bridge] plus numerous “minor” assaults, outbreaks of vandalism etc. Many of these incidents might have been prevented by adequate lighting along an important cross town link but our caring council would prefer to instal security cameras around the Dingle!
Oh a nearly forgot! The Avenue IS fully lit for around one week per year, for the convenience of Flower Show visitors!
