Shrewsbury Town boss Paul Simpson is looking to extend the stay of Spurs goalkeeper David Button — as he prepares for life without his two other loanees.

Button has impressed since joining from the Premier League giants, and Simpson is eager to see him remain at the Prostar Stadium beyond his initial month, which comes to an end after Saturday’s trip to Chesterfield.

But striker Waide Fairhurst and winger Jamie Devitt’s spells in Shropshire are both coming to an end.

Fairhurst has returned to Doncaster after suffering an injury that will rule him out for up to three weeks, while the Town chief will not look to extend Hull man Devitt’s loan beyond the weekend.

“I’m looking to try to extend David Button’s loan if we can get an agreement from Tottenham and from the chairman to let it go through,” Simpson said.

“We’ve got Chris Neal fit again but Andreas Arestidou is booked in for a hernia operation on January 5 and I’d be uncomfortable about going into January with just one goalkeeper.

“Waide Fairhurst has gone back to Doncaster to get an assessment on his foot injury.

“Jamie’s loan finishes on Saturday and I won’t be extending it after that point. He had a really good impact when he first came into the club but, unfortunately, it’s not continued that way.”

Meanwhile, the Town boss also confirmed he is looking to make changes to his squad during the January transfer window.

Simpson is eager to move one or two players on, in order to open up space for new faces to come on board.

“Our strikers haven’t got the goals you’d like,” he said. “Dave Hibbert has been a regular scorer and I’d like that to continue, but he needs someone up there to help him.

“We’re also short defensively. We’ve got no recognised centre half to go in if anything happens to Graham Coughlan or Kelvin Langmead.”
