Letter: Wish for quango to shut down
Wednesday 30th December 2009, 5:40AM GMT.
Letter: Re. “Feeding scraps to chickens is banned” (Shropshire Star, December 14). So another quango has flexed its muscles and stopped domestic and catering waste food being utilised to feed farm animals.
I would point out that waste food was fed to farm animals for centuries with no ill-effects.
The Foot and Mouth outbreak in 2001 may or may not have been caused by waste food.
But what caused its unprecedented spread was the fact that farm animals had to be transported half way across the country to be slaughtered, as small local slaughter houses had been closed down (another coup for the quango “Animal Health”?).
So now we have the ludicrous situation that waste food, which could well be fed to farm animals, has to be sent to landfill sites.
Let’s just hope that “Animal Health” is one of the quangos being sold off by the government, and then quietly closed down.

As above states, waste food was fed to pigs etc with no problems. Foot and mouth and the spread of can be laid at the feet of farmers who ignored the movement ban and the dealers who’s ways are questionable to say the least. Sadly many large farmers and dealers blamed so called small holders for the spread of FM not true .

“I would point out that waste food was fed to farm animals for centuries with no ill-effects.”
Really? You’ve evidence for that? Farm animals have suffered from serious diseases like foot and mouth since the year dot. These historical outbreaks must have been started/communicated by some means, and who’s to say they weren’t caused by feeding farm animals contaminated food scraps?
‘Centuries ago’ the causation of animal diseases was attributed to all types of phenomenon – witchcraft stoping your cow from producing milk, anybody? – most of which have since been debunked by modern science.
Now that we actually have the means to investigate the cause and effect of animal diseases is it a), better to follow the guidance based on these findings, or b) carry on as normal because it’s ‘what we’ve always done’?

we should listen to science not loud mouths like finch besides which its only on farms, at home you can feed chickens what ever you choose, no one can regulate your back garden, behind closed doors we often feed the chickens on left over dinner and vegetable peelings

In the late 40′s early 50′s I collected household food waste from several premises including Hiatt’s College for my late father to feed to his pigs and fowl .All this waste was boiled in a cast iron free standing boiler ,it was never fed direct .It was stored if not used straight away in barrels after boiling .When feeding it was mixed with Sharps meal we had delivered from Donnington Mill .I cannot remember any problems health wise with our livestock .Perhaps the boiling was the answer

A bit “off-topic” I s’pose, but when shropshire lad asks us to ‘listen to science’, is that in the same manner as we should listen to (and trust) the science and data of Phil Jones / Keith Briffa / Michael Mann / Ben Santer / Tom Wigley / Tim Osborne / Jonathan Overpeck et al?

in ludlow they collect it for making bio gas and green energy which in my view is the way forward we should all be doing this to turn food waste into useful energy
