Wolves dropped to 16th place, two points above the relegation zone, following the result, City’s first away win since August.

With Stephen Ward suspended, McCarthy left four others from the Boxing Day defeat at Anfield on the bench and put Michael Mancienne into midfield as Wolves hoped to pull off a shock win against one of the most expensively assembled sides ever created in club football.

Former Coventry striker Craig Bellamy, selected instead of Brazil’s Robinho, fired over for the visitors before he set up Carlos Tevez to score on 33 minutes.

Wolves had chances through Chris Iwelumo, who shot over, and Kevin Doyle, who could not beat Shay Given when put through, before Javier Garrido bent his free-kick around the wall and past the motionless Marcus Hahnemann on 69 minutes.

Four minutes from the end, Tevez finished following a pass by substitute Robinho.

Wolves also lost Christophe Berra to injury, with Richard Stearman take his place in the back line for the second half.
