I am utterly disgusted at the way this event has been covered in the shropshire star as if its a cause for celebration – a bunch of bored snobs brutally killing animals and trespassing over other peoples land. Discgraceful, nearly made me sick.

charlie, if you dont fox hunt then well done for accepting the law. but its a well known fact that the practice of “cubbing” still takes place and a lot of so called country lovers still find the need to chase our furry friends around until they are ripped apart. if you want a sport take up golf its in the open air and its legal and you can still wear silly clothes.. Anon is quite right with his / her comments dont think charlie your fooling anyone .

i do hunt.i would like to know if as you stated its a “fact” that cubbing still takes place and we “country people” find the need to chase furry friends around until they are ripped apart, why have we all not been arrested?
we stay within the law but are still treated like criminals.maybe you should come along and see what really happens instead of being very narrow minded and believing what you see on the tv.

the reason why more people follow the hunt is that you don’t see foxes torn to shreds like happened in the past.

All the furore from hunts when the Act was passed hasn’t come about – there haven’t been mass redundcancies and packs of hounds having been put down as they predicted. Instaed everyone can enjoy riding around if they so desire without having the “fun” of killing wild animals. Seems like a win-win situation to me.

Why doesn’t the Star cover people meeting for a spot of badger baiting or hare coursing?

And I reckon quite a few of the readers would like to see a cock fight.

nice to see the hunts regularly meeting providing sport chasing trails
in the unlikely event of the tories being elected next spring, i would lay off the hunting ban if i was them, as when they lose power in 4 years they may see new labour bring in a much tougher, hunting, shooting and fishing ban.
likewise new labour would be wise to lay off the class issue as hunting is for everybody and has more supporters and followers now than ever.
this is due to the hunting ban cleaning up the sport, no more digging up the foxes, no more cubbing, just huntsman hounds and followers out for some clean sport. ok yes the occasional sick fox will be killed, but hunting is now a really cleaned up sport.
those who chase hares or stags should go to prison when caught, now is not a time for harking back to the good old days but for being grateful for what we have. joicks tally ho

charlie, you havent been arrested as yet as there simply isnt the resource to police hunting, cubbing, wildlife management call it what you will. And just to clarify i dont need to believe what i see on the tv , i just walk out of my door into the countryside where i live and hear and see what is still taking place. not all anti hunters live in the towns you know.

i still think killing animals for food is fine but killing them for sport is sick

the hunting lobby is getting alot of PR now and expecting to over turn the ban when the tories get back in but i still think most folk in the UK think their sport is bang out of order and should be stopped on cruelty grounds

I class myself as an urban dweller from urban stock, but I spent many of my younger formative years in the country. I realise that qualifies for little but thought I’d get that out of the way first. The Shropshire Star’s majority readership is bound to be urban not rural. It should balance reports on hunting/chasing trails to placate all sides of the argument. By glorifying or glamourising hunting the paper will immediately alienate many of its readership. For most people it’s not that important an issue. I am anti hunting for many reasons, not least the unnecessary and unjustifiable levels of cruelty. I suspect that the Conservatives may play straight into the hands of the traditional Labour vote by making hunting an election pledge. There is an inescapable class history with Labour and Conservative voters. Those who are “floating” may go back to their roots if this becomes an election issue.

    “19 – are you sure that shouldn’t read 9?”

About the level of most anti-hunting arguments in my experience. Simple and bigoted, the very thing hunting people often get accused of.

“i still think killing animals for food is fine but killing them for sport is sick”

That doesnt sound like a cruelty based argument to me, as you later suggest it is. Apparently the level of suffering that might be caused by something (i.e. meat/poultry production) is irrelevant to you as long as people don’t call it a ‘sport’. Attitudes like this are one of the reasons hunting was banned and they are simply illogical.

It’s a shame that so many posters on this forum think this is scandalous reporting.
Hunting is not just for the upper classes, please be aware of that – toffs and snobs are not accurate descriptions of today’s hunting fraternity, hunting is for everyone that can pay their subscription or visitors fee. All are welcome providing they behave themselves and respect other riders, and people’s land. (not trespassing I may add).
Also, as a consequence of the Hunting Act, all hunts have to follow new rules, and that also covers cubbing, it’s not exempt. These rules are strict and enable the hunts to abide by the law. Many hunts couldn’t actually go ahead on Boxing Day due to the ice making conditions highly dangerous for horses and hounds. You will find that most hunts came out to meet, and went for a little ride on the main road and back to the boxes. This was to respect the public’s support, but also to treat the horses correctly.
Modern fox hunting is not what many people think it is.

Cubbing has not stopped at all. It has just been rebranded as ‘Autumn Hunting’. There is no case for repeal. Hunt numbers are up all over the country. Drag hunting is legal. The sense of community, pageantry, heritage, and jobs are all still intact and yet these disgraceful people can’t manage to enjoy themselves unless they are terrifying and killing animals.

If you support the hunting act, please get your names on the R.O.A.R. (Register Online Against Repeal), an ‘all party’ list
