Young hot-shot Andre Gray hopes that opening his goalscoring account for AFC Telford United can help him catch the eye of parent club Shrewsbury Town.

Gray netted an 87th minute winner for the Bucks in their 2-1 win over Blue Square North rivals Stafford Rangers on Boxing Day, notching his first goal in senior football.

The teenager is on loan from League Two side Shrewsbury, and was making a return to action after two-and-a-half weeks out with a hamstring injury.

And he made a huge impression as a late substitute, though he also picked up a yellow card for taking his shirt off to celebrate his goal.

“I really enjoyed it,” he said. “It had been a really tight game so it was relieving to score the winning goal.

“I was really happy so I thought I’d take the booking – it was the only way I could express myself.

“It was my first game back since I’d been injured, so I was happy to be involved.

“Now I want to keep playing and scoring goals. My main aim is to progress into the first team at Shrewsbury and hopefully I can get noticed by doing well here.”

Telford were today due to continue their festive programme away at Hinckley United, though there were doubts over the involvement of top scorer Andy Brown.

He has been revealed to be playing with a cracked rib and was only able to feature as a substitute against Stafford on Boxing Day.

“He’s had it for four or five weeks and it’s starting to heal,” said assistant manager Larry Chambers.

“With three games in seven days, we thought about resting him on Saturday.

“But, because we needed a goal, we brought him on and he made a bit of a difference.

“We took advice from the physios and consultants and they said we should use him sparingly, but he could still start games.”

  • Danny Edwards scored the second goal of his loan spell at Halesowen, the winger netting an equaliser in the Zamaretto League side’s 2-1 win over Stourbridge on Boxing Day.
