Queues for annual sales frenzy

Saturday 26th December 2009, 10:30AM GMT.

Bargain hunters queued for the annual Next sale at the Forge Retail Park in Telford The high street could be in for a post-Christmas boom as hundreds of people lined up at stores across the country today to cash in as the January sales kicked off early.

In Shropshire, more than 150 bargain hunters queued for the annual Next sale at the chain’s Forge Retail Park in Telford with the scenes mirrored elsewhere in the county.

The chain normally launches its sales at 5am on December 27 but with the date falling on a Sunday this year bosses brought it forward to avoid being limited to Sunday trading hours.

However, that did not put off shoppers with the first in the queue at the Forge taking their places just after 3am.

Brother and sister Chris and Leanne Manuel travelled from Llanidloes and Welshpool, leaving home at 2.20am to be the first through the doors when they opened at 7am.

They were prepared to spend upwards of £750 with a list of things to get from other members of the family.

“We are here to buy items in childrenswear and homeware and plan to split up to try and cover all the different departments,” said Leanne who had been to the sale in previous years but it was a first for Chris.

Sonja Newton, of Muxton, Telford, was also set to splash out about £400 after joining the queue at 4.30am.

“I can get enough childrenswear to clothe the family for up to six months, sometimes 12 months for what I will spend today,” said Sonja who has been a regular at the Next sale for the last eight years.

“I think it has become of of our Christmas traditions now, when you think you can get jeans for £12 today that were £35 just a few days ago you can’t afford to miss it.”

Selfridges stores in Birmingham and Manchester began trading at 8am, and the London flagship was opening at 9am.

Debenhams was holding what it has called its biggest ever sale from 7am. Customers shopping online were able to get discounts two days early via its website.

A number of other chains also cut online prices before Christmas. DIY chain B&Q began its sale both on its website and in stores on Christmas Eve.

Retailers are expecting this to be one of the busiest shopping days of the year.

As above these shoppers nead to get a life. Bargains NONE were had most if not all sales use it as an excuse to get rid of out dated items or the rubbish. Bargains real ones can be had every day via sites such as ebay etc or going in to the more upmarket stores and asking for discounts. If you cant get a disount where you shop the items you are buying are cheap and chearful already.

Hilarious! What a bunch of sad people. My cousin worked at Next for years and the stuff they get out in the sale is whatever they couldn’t shift at full price from two years ago! If you want a ‘bargain’, try visiting the outlet stores at Cheshire Oaks or somewhere any time of the year, it’s the same rubbish for the same reduced price and you don’t have to queue like a loser in the dark for hours.

I can’t believe people are actually commenting on this…it’s up to the individual to go shopping if they want – hardly doing anyone else any harm at all. And my new years resolution is to stop commenting on the rediculous stories that we keep seeing on this website. Before I go then – Quantum Leap – hope it collapses into the Severn. Shrewsbury town – Middle of the road team with middle of the road leadership. Taxi Drivers – dont use them cos I cycle everywhere, on and off pavements, sometimes in lycra. England Football Team winning world cup – see comments for Shrewsbury town. Icy Roads – just drive slower. X Factor – Forgotten the name of the winner already (apart from Coweel of course).

Happy new year to all of your readers – Wont see you around.

I went today to avoid the temptation to spend money I haven’t got on crap I don’t need and it worked – only spent a tenner and no queues!

On the lookout for reasonably priced stainless steel microwave so if anyone knows of one at a bargain price?
