Plea over threat of more taxi strikes
Saturday 26th December 2009, 10:27AM GMT.
A council chief who oversaw a major review of taxi services three years ago in Telford today urged private hire drivers in the town who are demanding another to withdraw a threat of strike action.
Councillor Kuldip Sahota also called on Telford & Wrekin Council bosses to “calm down” in their dealings with the drivers.
Private hire drivers, who caused chaos when they staged a strike in Telford last Saturday night, have vowed to walk out again if they get public backing for an independent review of services.
The Telford Private Hire Drivers Association has said it wants to know whether revellers support them before deciding whether to carry on with more strikes.
Councillor Sahota said: “I urge the drivers not to let the public down in this festive season when they need your services most.
“I also ask the council to calm down a little. The attitude of ‘so be it’ is not conducive here.”

Take away their licences, holding the public to ransom at such a crucial time of the year is highway robbery, but they are used to doing that

Private hire vehicles ,which make up the greatest percentage of passenger carrying vehicles, are not taxis and it is a condition of their use, agreed by all operators, that they do not ply for hire .They can only legally be booked through the telephone number dispayed on the vehicles .This is not a condition laid down by by Telford &Wrekin Council but by National Government .The reason for the ban on plying for hire is that the person being carried in a private hire without the permission of the operator is NOT INSURED It is incumbent on all councils that they must at regular occasions check that the vehicles being operated under license from them are in a roadworthy condition and the drivers comply with the conditions that they sign to observe i.e.they do not ply for hire and put their passengers at risk .Possibly the Minor Transgressions to which Telford &Wrekin Private Hire Drivers Association refer have occurred because T&W Council Officers are currently and responsibly undertaking a check on drivers illegally plying for hire and if they find drivers doing so it is the duty of the officers to report the matter to the police who take action to punish the offenders .Even though drivers ,found guilty have to report the matter to the Licensing Committee of the Councilfor their consideration .I doubt if any driver has had his/her license revoked because of their illegal actions ,I stand to be corrected on this if I am wrong .These are not minor transgressions and Councillor Sahota being our rep. on the Police Authority should know this .The safety of the public is of paramount importance in this respect and the actions of the Officers carrying out these important checks must have the full backing of the public .Perhaps Councillor Sahota does not put the public first ?.

So let me get this right, the private hire drivers want the same benefits regarding parking as hackney carriages? I say let them have them provided they pay the same amounts for their operating licences….ah didn’t tell you that did they? If they get a review of taxis only three years down the road from the last does this mean they will throw teddy out of the bed each and everytime a driver is held to task for breaking the law, the law that they agreed to comply with when they obtained their licences?

You won’t the public to back you? let us see a full detailed list of your problems. As far as I can see is all you have done is alienate the public..
And now you intend to strike on new year’s eve and alienate the public even more…Take your issues up with council go demonstrate outside their premises …Taxi drivers will be only ones losing out on new year ..the public will find alternative ways home or stay in..your loss

The Telford Private Hire Drivers Association wants to know if revellers will support them
No you plonkers – not if you ruin their holidays!
I’m all for BA staff, taxi drivers and posties earning a fair wage with fair conditions and a job well done but when are these people going to realise that you will not gain public support by inconveniencing the public during the holidays? They only support you’ll see is public hatred. If the taxi drivers want to strike do it in January when no-ones got any money to go out anyway and they won’t lose so much income and we won’t be bothered!
