A Shrewsbury alcohol and wine merchants could lose its licence after police said it was selling booze to children.
The Local store in Shoplatch is set to face a review of its premises licence in the New Year after West Mercia Police said it had collated evidence of the store breaking the law during October. Members of Shropshire Council’s Central Licensing Sub-Committee will meet to discuss the matter on January 5.
Options include taking no action, issuing a formal warning, suspending or even revoking the licence.
Nobody was available for comment from The Local today.
A report by Carol Foster, licensing team leader (Central) for Shropshire Council, to councillors, says: “West Mercia Constabulary has made an application for a review of a premises licence on the grounds that the premises operates in such a manner as to undermine the protection of children from harm licensing objective.
“The application for review is supported by evidence relating to sales of alcohol to persons under the age of 18 years during October 2009.
“No representations from responsible authorities or interested parties were received during the consultation period, although there has been an application to transfer the premises licence to Dave’s Discount (Stores) Ltd that has been approved.”
In her report, Mrs Foster says the premises licence for The Local was approved in August 16, 2005.
She says: “In light of the evidence submitted and the information given at the hearing, it is for the sub-committee to determine whether the conditions of the current licence are sufficient to promote the protection of children from harm licensing objective.”
Nobody from The Local was available for comment today. First Quench, the owner of The Local, Threshers, Wine Rack, and Haddows, went into administration in October.
Administrators KPMG said it would look to save “as many jobs as possible” by selling the business.

Fairly pointless story – First Quench Retailing, which owns The Local (and Thresher etc) is in receivership. The store will be closing shortly.
