Langmead chasing some festive cheer

Thursday 24th December 2009, 8:53AM GMT.

kelvin-langmead-iKelvin Langmead has urged Shrewsbury Town to “stick together” as they attempt to bring some Christmas cheer to a stuttering season.

Town have endured a difficult last two months and have slipped down to 10th in League Two, eight points off the automatic promotion places and three adrift of the play-off spots.

Still reeling from last week’s 4-0 defeat at Rochdale, Shrewsbury’s attention has now switched to returning to winning ways when Macclesfield visit the Prostar Stadium on Boxing Day.

And Langmead is hoping Shrewsbury can end the first half of their season on a high.

“We have had a disappointing time but we have to stick together as a football club and as a football team and turn it round,” said Shrewsbury’s longest serving player.

“When you come off the back of a poor run of games you are going to get some stick but we still believe we are good enough to get back on track.

“Macclesfield is going to be a tough game for us but it’s the midway point of our season.

“If we can get a result, we will edge closer to the top seven and then we can put the first half to bed and look forward.”

Defender Langmead admitted the manner of the goals conceded at Spotland last week came as a major disappointment.

“We have conceded too many goals this season but we had a spell before Rochdale where we had started to keep one or two clean sheets,” he added.

“The goals we conceded last week were very poor and we were extremely disappointed as a back four and as a team. It’s something we need to get right.”

Tomorrow’s game begins a hectic spell of two games within 48 hours for the majority of teams across England, with Shrewsbury heading to Bradford on Bank Holiday Monday.

And Langmead is aware any festive celebrations will have to be put firmly on the back-burner.

“For me, Christmas is a write-off and I have no problems with that,” he added.

“We have to prepare properly for the busiest time of the season and be as professional as we can.”
