A barbershop singer from Telford has proved he can hit the high notes by winning the manager of the month award in the Shropshire Star’s fantasy football game, writes Chris Leggett.

Grandfather Kevin Mattox, 46, of St Winifred’s Drive, Donnington, led the field by scoring 84 points in November, eight points ahead of his nearest rival.

Wolves fan Kevin, a Telford & Wrekin Council support worker for adults with learning difficulties, has sung with the Telfordaires Barbershop Chorus for the last eight years.

He won 100 cans of beer courtesy of Banks’s, the prize sponsor for the Shropshire Star’s game, which he collected from the Taverners pub, in Southwater Way, Telford. Kevin’s team lucymattox1, named after his two-year-old granddaughter, included: Edwin van der Sar (Man Utd), Ashley Cole (Chelsea), Phil Bardsley (Sunderland), John Terry (Chelsea), Ryan Shawcross (Stoke), Ashley Young (Aston Villa), Cesc Fabregas (Arsenal), David Dunn (Blackburn), James Milner (Aston Villa), Jermain Defoe (Tottenham), Wayne Rooney (Man Utd).

Father of three Kevin made a series of changes over the course of the month to scoop the award.

He says: “I like to look at the game regularly to see who is performing well and then make transfers, which paid off in November.

“I have played a few of the national newspaper games but I wanted to support the Star game, so it’s great to win a prize.”

Kevin enjoys being part of the Telfordaires: “I work all hours with my job but enjoy singing barbershop with the group. We perform locally a lot, which is enjoyable.”

Kevin is backing manager Mick McCarthy to keep Wolves in the Premier League. He said: “I used to be a season ticket holder at Wolves so I hope they stay up but I would like to see West Midland clubs in general doing well.”
