Council told of delay over crackdown on boozing

Wednesday 23rd December 2009, 12:20PM GMT.

Councillors have said they are disappointed that a crackdown on more than 30 boozing troublespots in Oswestry had still not been introduced – nearly a year after it was approved.

Members of the now defunct Oswestry Borough Council agreed in February to designate areas in Oswestry, Weston Rhyn and St Martins as alcohol control zones.

The zones are controlled by a public places order which means people commit an offence if they carry on drinking when asked to stop by a police officer or a community support officer.

However, the zones have not been introduced because the proper regulations were not followed, Weston Rhyn Parish Council was told.

Shropshire Council, which took over responsibility for the orders, has said it will have to restart the consultation process because of the oversight by the former borough council and orders are likely to be implemented in March or April.

Weston Rhyn parish councillor Angela Bright said people would be disappointed at the delay.

She said: “The idea was to crack down on troublespots and there is a few in Weston Rhyn. I think it is disappointing it has not yet been done despite the decision being taken in February.”

Oswestry town councillor Betty Gull said: “I think everyone would have loved these orders to be in place by now but if there is a problem then it must be resolved.”

Shropshire Council said it was too early to say how much it would cost. Spokeswoman Rian Huxley said: “The former Oswestry Borough Council invested £630 in the process. All works carried out by the authority have been brought forward to Shropshire Council.”
