Ashes of wife stolen in burglary

Wednesday 23rd December 2009, 4:00PM GMT.

Intruders stole a bag containing the ashes of a householder’s wife in a raid on a Telford home. An appeal was today made for the bag taken in the burglary in Red Lake to be returned.

The burglars broke into the Castle View home by forcing open the kitchen window while the 61-year-old occupier was out.

They then got into the property and carried out a thorough, untidy search before stealing items, including a 42in Sony LCD television, police said.

The most significant item stolen was a green velvet drawstring bag, which contained the ashes of the burglary victim’s dead wife.

Police said the loss of the ashes had caused the victim great distress and officers at the specialist operations department at Malinsgate Police Station were keen to trace the thieves responsible for this burglary as soon as they could.

The break-in happened between 6pm and 9.30pm on December 12.

Chris Ammonds, Telford police spokesman, said: “The victim of this burglary did not realise that the green velvet bag had been stolen initially which is why we are only appealing for information about this offence now.

“He is absolutely devastated by the theft of his wife’s ashes and although the chances are probably slim, he would appeal to the thieves to return the bag containing the ashes if they do still have it in their possession.”
