Antique jewellery stolen in town raid
Wednesday 23rd December 2009, 9:24AM GMT.
More than £100,000 worth of jewellery has been stolen during a raid on a Shropshire antiques centre.
Silverware, gold jewellery and watches thought to be valued at more than £100,000 were stolen from Shrewsbury Antiques Centre, off The Square in Shrewsbury, some time between 5pm on Saturday and 9am on Monday.
Today proprietor John Langford said he believed a professional gang had targeted the centre.
He said: “This is the first time in 25 years in the town that we have been hit like this and it is disappointing to say the least.
“They must have been a professional gang because they managed to take the bell alarm system out before entering and then made off with plenty of stuff.
“They broke some glass while inside, but managed to get into some with the keys.
“I presume they must have recently visited the centre and sussed out how to get in and where things were kept.”
A spokesman for West Mercia Police said that once inside, the offenders unlocked up to 12 cabinets using keys from inside the premises and transferred items into bags.
She said: “They are likely to have been in the premises for some time and may have used a vehicle to leave the scene and transport the stolen goods away.
“Police are also keen to hear from anybody who might be offered antique items similar to any of those stolen for sale.”
