The occupier of the Ketley flat tried to put out the fire but was forced to call the fire service when he was unsuccessful.

Firefighters were called to Reynold’s House, off Station Road, at 12.35am and took about five minutes to put out the flames.

Aubrey Thomas, watch manager at Wellington Fire Station, said: “The alarm was going off in the premises and residents were beginning to evacuate the building.”
