Alcohol taken off underage drinkers
Tuesday 22nd December 2009, 9:37AM GMT.
A booze haul of dozens of bottles and cans of beer, cider, spirits and wine have been seized from underage teenagers in Shrewsbury town centre.
The alcohol was confiscated as police continue their clampdown on alcohol-related anti-social behaviour this Christmas.
Officers carried out high visibility patrols on Sunday night, stopping young people on their way to an under-18s party at the Severn Cellars nightclub and confiscating any alcohol they had.
Working closely with the management and door supervisors at the premises, who searched everyone attending before they were allowed inside, a large amount of alcohol was taken from those below the legal drinking age.
Sergeant Claire Greenaway, in charge of policing for Shrewsbury town centre, said the patrols had been a huge success and praised staff at the nightclub for their assistance and co-operation.
“A team of officers was on hand to seize alcohol from young people who were underage and to provide them with suitable advice on being intoxicated and the risk to their personal safety,” she said.
Sergeant Greenaway said young people attending the night came from towns across Shropshire, not just Shrewsbury, and she warned that the patrols and seizures would continue.

Good story this – it’s about police officers doing their jobs. Bit ground breaking I know, doubt whether it will catch on
