Man hands back £800 found in street

A good samaritan who found a wad of £20 notes on a Shropshire industrial estate has been rewarded for his honesty after handing it in to police.
Police today said the owner of the cash had driven off in his car from the Maesbury Industrial Estate in Oswestry forgetting he had placed the cash on the roof while he opened the door.
Simon Borthwick, 28, of Oswestry, found the notes in the road and collected £880 from the original £1,000, handing the money in to Oswestry police station. He has since been rewarded £200 by the owner, who has not been named, as a Christmas tip.
Mr Borthwick said: “We were coming down Maesbury Road and I saw £20 on the floor so I stopped. When I got to the other side of the road there was a bundle of £20 notes flying down the road.”
He added: “I was quite shocked. It would have been nice to find £20, you would probably keep it yourself, but £800 to £900 is a lot of money to lose, you’ve got to hand it in, I couldn’t have kept it.”
Mr Borthwick said it took three weeks for the rightful owner to come forward, who then gave him a reward for his honesty.
