Staff’s bash is attacked by MP
Friday 18th December 2009, 4:05PM GMT.
Telford MP David Wright today launched a Twitter attack on press officers at Telford & Wrekin Council – for choosing to hold their Christmas bash in Shrewsbury instead of Telford.
Mr Wright wrote he was “gobsmacked by the hypocrisy of Telford council press office” and attacked the council for failing to support local restaurants in three separate tweets on his site.
The Labour MP later insisted it was a tongue-in-cheek joke and did not mean any harm – but Telford & Wrekin Council leader Councillor Andrew Eade was not amused.
The council leader said the party was organised out of work hours and paid for by the team, most of whom live in Shrewsbury.
He said it was the first time the Christmas party had been held outside of the borough.
Mr Wright said: “We were just having a bit of fun with the guys in the press office – it was not meant to be taken seriously.”

He might have a point though. Anyone know any good restaurants in Telford, I don’t trust the Star’s reviews anymore.

What about then Great Dawley Parish Council holding their christmas party at the Park Inn and not in the local economy of Dawley and Malinslee, run and chosen by the labour party?
It was done in function rooms in the local economy for many many years, why not now?

Given that nearly 300 pensioners attended the Christmas Party I would have thought that holding it at the nearest hotel was the sensible option.
It’s only a few hundred yards outside the parish and I’m sure it employs local people.

The staff’s Christmas do was funded by anyone other than the staff themselves. On that basis, and since they live in Shrewsbury anyway, I think it’s entirely up to them where they hold it.

Correction to last post – ‘the staff’s Christmas do was NOT funded by anyone other than themselves…
