Work taking place at Shrewsbury’s Market Hall clock tower is general maintenance work, bosses confirmed today.

Rumours had circulated on the internet that the clock tower was in a serious state of disrepair.

But today market hall bosses and traders poured cold water on the rumours, saying the work was planned annual maintenance.

Kate Gittens, Market Hall site facilities manager, said today: “All I can say is that it is planned maintenance work.”

Traders said the work was carried out annually to keep the tower in good order.

One trader, who did not want to be named said: “It is just annual work that is carried out to keep it in a good condition.

“There is nothing in the rumours that it is about to fall down, it is just people with too much time on their hands.”

Another trader added: “There are rumours flying round the clock tower is falling down. All we’ve been told is it is general maintenance.”

The tower has been covered in green safety netting after abseiling construction workers spent time fixing it into place earlier this week.

In January the clock was repaired after it had been running more than 30 minutes slow for a week.

The fault was caused by electrical remedial work at the Market Hall, which led to an interruption to the electrical supply which caused the clock to stop for a few minutes.
