A smattering of snow covered parts of Shropshire and Mid Wales this morning, but other parts of Britan suffered much worse with flights cancelled, roads closed and rail services disrupted.

Gatwick was shut for more than seven hours and there were no early flights from Luton. Rail travellers also faced delays with services cancelled and racing at Royal Ascot was called off due to the weather.

Shropshire Star weatherman John Warner said there was a chance of light snow today and tomorrow, but said the worst could come on Sunday.

“A polar front is coming over on Saturday night and the hills could see several inches of snow,” he said.

Shropshire and Mid Wales emergency services reported a busy night despite there only being a light coating of snow in some areas.

Ice and poor visibility were blamed for a number of collisions.
