Most of the UK including Shropshire was expected to see some snow today as the cold snap continues.
Slight snow showers are expected to fall across the county today but Shropshire Star weatherman John Warner said that the heaviest of the snow would fall in the county over the weekend. He said: “Today and Friday are expected to be sunny, with slight snow showers.
“But Shropshire will see most of the snow on Saturday and Sunday. Tomorrow night the temperatures could get down to -5C (23F).”
While the county is being warned that it can expect three to five inches on the hills over the weekend, Suffolk and Norfolk are expected to be covered later today with a fall of between 10 and 15cms.
London has already been hit by snow showers with the Prime Minister’s home getting a blanket overnight.
Already anticipation is growing for a white Christmas as the bookmakers have slashed their odds.
Bookmaker Ladbrokes yesterday cut its odds on London experiencing a white Christmas from 5/2 to 2/1.
It is also offering odds of 2/1 for a white Christmas in Glasgow.
Aberdeen has odds of 11/8 while Birmingham, Cardiff, Dublin and Manchester are all on 11/4.
Nick Weinberg, spokesman for Ladbrokes, said: “Yesterday’s snow storm prompted a flurry of festive flutters.
“If it continues, punters will be enjoying Christmas on us this year.”
William Hill said that the company would have to pay out millions of pounds to its punters if there is a blanket of snow across the country on December 25. One gambler from Derbyshire stands to collect more than £14,000 if snow falls in the UK on Christmas Day.
Rupert Adams, spokesman for William Hill, said: “The million pound snow flake is something that we have always talked about in hushed tones and for the first time this millennium it looks like we could get collared.
“There is unlikely to be much festive cheer in our office this year.”
But weatherman Mr Mott believes bookmakers in the north of England have more to be worried about.
He added: “If there is any snow at Christmas it is looking more likely in northern areas.
“It will be milder in the south. The fun starts tonight.”
London could see between two and five centimetres, he added, with a strong wind making it feel bitterly cold.
Less snow is expected in north and western parts but temperatures could fall as low as -5C (23F), he said.
East Anglia and the south east are likely to see further snow showers tomorrow.
More snow is expected across the UK on Saturday.

Stand by for the usual ‘snow-related’ hysteria!
It’s a good job too that the schools break up on Friday the 18th, otherwise they’d be planning the usual ‘snow-related’ early school closures and non openings – all in the name of pupils ‘health and safety’ of course… ;-)

Snow in winter? Whatever next?
No doubt we will have the Radio Shropshire ‘Snow Line’ to listen into which will tell us that there is snow on Clee Hill and all sorts of live on air comments of ‘I’ve never seen it this bad before, where are the army?’
