Trees fall across M54
Wednesday 16th December 2009, 11:20AM GMT.
Part of Shropshire’s M54 was blocked for more than an hour-and-a-half after a trailer carrying Christmas trees overturned.
The trees were strewn across the motorway after the trailer which was attached to a Jeep overturned at 1.40pm yesterday.
The Highways Agency closed off one of the lanes between junctions four to three on the east bound carriageway towards Wolverhampton. The lane was closed until 3.15pm. The driver of the Jeep was not thought to have been injured in the incident.
With roads getting icy, drivers are being warned that a dusting of snow is expected in certain parts of the country today after a bitterly cold night.
It is unlikely there will be enough to make a snowman in most places but rural areas of the South East may see between 1 and 2cm today and more at the weekend.
Paul Mott, forecaster at MeteoGroup UK, said temperatures dropped to -6C (21.2F) in some rural areas overnight.
Tonight will also be cold, he said, although increased cloud cover will prevent temperatures falling as low. More snow flurries are expected in central and eastern areas of the UK tomorrow. “There could be up to 10 or 15cms of snow,” warned Mr Mott.
More snow is expected later this week with many areas seeing a dusting of flakes by Saturday night.
