Show council outlines bid to create new event

Wednesday 16th December 2009, 11:29AM GMT.

A new money-making event could be put together in Shrewsbury by West Mid Show bosses as part of a package to help in the fight for the show’s survival.

A “substantially changed” show, which would still have an agricultural element, was proposed at an emergency meeting of the Shropshire and West Midlands Agricultural Society last night.

Just over half of the 40-strong society’s council met to discuss alternative proposals to liquidation proceedings, which were adjourned last week to January 7.

Member Roy Dodd put forward a financial plan to save the society, which includes a proposal for the new show and a proposed deal to repay creditors over the next five years, known as a Company Voluntary Arrangement.

The society narrowly escaped being put into liquidation last week despite owing nearly 80 creditors around £260,000. Society chairman Neale Sadler described last night’s meeting as “positive” but warned there was a “long way to go”.

If three-quarters of the 2,000 members of the show do not vote to put the society, a charity and a limited company, into liquidation on January 7, then they will be asked to support the plan.

The meeting also appointed four more trustees. They are Roy Dodd, Caroline Davies, Alistair Home-Roberts and Richard Breeze.

Mr Sadler said: “We have to make this business plan work which isn’t going to be easy because we need to rebuild confidence for the local community and the suppliers which are still owed money.”

It is hoped a meeting of the creditors will be held ahead of the January meeting.
