Mobile camera set to be upgraded

A mobile spy camera which has been hailed a major success in reducing crime and anti-social behaviour in a troubled area of Shrewsbury is to be upgraded.

The camera was installed in Spring Gardens, Ditherington, this year following complaints about groups of youths to police and Severnside Housing.

And the device is said to have had a dramatic impact on affected streets including Whitehouse Gardens, Wingfield Close and Wingfield Gardens.

Now officials have received cash for an even better CCTV camera.

Councillor Alan Mosley, ward member for the area, said: “The money for a new improved, live, higher-quality CCTV which will beam direct to the control room has now been allocated.

“Since the installation of the present CCTV there appears to have been a significant improvement in behaviour in the area. This new equipment will provide much better quality images and will be viewed live in the control centre, which is staffed 24/7.”

l An infra-red camera could be set up in Shrewsbury to protect a bronze bust of gardener Percy Thrower.

The statue in the Quarry was damaged this year. Shrewsbury Town Council is exploring the option of linking a camera to the town’s CCTV operation.
