Workmen abseiling down the clock tower in Shrewsbury
Safety work is to be carried out on Shrewsbury’s landmark Market Hall clock tower.
The tower was today covered in green safety netting after abseiling construction workers spent yesterday fixing it into place.
But officials from the Market Hall were tight lipped over exactly what work will be carried out on the structure.
In January the clock was repaired after it had been running more than 30 minutes slow for a week.
The fault was caused by electrical remedial work at the Market Hall, which led to an interruption to the electrical supply which caused the clock to stop for a few minutes.
A spokeswoman for the Market Hall said the latest work was planned maintenance. She said: “The Market Hall is currently undergoing some planned essential maintenance work to ensure that the building stays in good condition. As part of these works, netting has been installed to protect the clock tower.
“The general works will not affect opening times or cause any disruptions to shoppers or retailers and will be completed before Christmas.”
The Market Hall site facilities manager, Kate Gittins, also refused to be drawn on what exactly was being done to the building.
She said: “We are doing some maintenance repairs to the clock tower.
“I can’t say any more than that.”
